If you need a new roof, think about getting architectural shingles to replace your existing shingles. Architectural shingles are a premium grade of asphalt shingle roofing. The shingles are thicker and have a distinctive, textured appearance. They are also known as dimensional shingles or laminate shingles.
Builders and roofing contractors recommend architectural shingles because of all of the improvements over the shingles from previous decades. Home buyers have come to expect a roof with architectural shingles. So if you’re thinking about selling your home at some point in the future it pays to make the upgrade.
Architectural shingles are available in a rainbow of colors. Many of the roofing manufacturers have a tool on their website that lets you see what a particular color would look like on your home. You don’t have to have a cookie cutter roof.
The old style, standard roofing shingles are called “3-tab” in the roofing trade. They are so named because of the 3 tab/flaps with quarter-inch grooves between them in each panel. They run in flat, even rows as opposed to the textured and layered look of architectural shingles.
A roof laid with regular 3-tab shingles has an average 15 to 20-year lifespan, meaning you may have to replace the roof twice if you live in the same house for most of your life. A roof laid with architectural shingles has a 24 to 30-year lifespan, with some super-premium grades rated for up to a 40-year lifespan. These new dimensional shingles also come in wider variety of colors and subtle color patterns. They have greater resistance to uplift in a windstorm, and have a heavier granule covering. Be aware that for the first few weeks after installation, there may be some granules in your gutters. This is because the manufacturer adds extra granules to ensure proper coverage of the asphalt shingles. This shedding of extra granules is normal, and will not hurt your roof.
Architectural shingles have greater curb appeal as well, and can help the resale value of your home. Drive around your neighborhood and notice the difference between a roof with dimensional shingles and standard shingles. The difference in curb appeal is quite obvious. We use premium shingles from GAF Roofing, or Atlas Roofing. Check out their websites to get a feel for the many textures and colors that are available.
Many of these roofing systems come with lifetime warranties, making the upgrade to architectural shingles well worth your investment.
