Cedar siding is a natural choice for a beautiful home exterior. Real cedar siding instantly adds warmth and beauty to your home. You can’t get that with machine-made siding. The look, the feel and the scent of natural wood just can’t be duplicated in a manufacturing plant.
Cedar Shake Siding and Other Types of Cedar Siding
Cedar siding comes in several different profiles, including cedar shake siding, cedar shingle siding and cedar lap siding. Whichever look you choose, the benefits of cedar siding are numerous. Western red cedar is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect infestation. In addition, vinyl and other siding substitutes are susceptible to fading due to sun exposure – only unlike cedar siding, composite materials can’t be restored or refinished once their color has faded. So if you want siding that lasts decades and just keeps getting better with age, then cedar is the way to go. Real cedar does require periodic cleaning and re-staining to remove dirt, mildew, iron stains, water stains, chalking and more. It’s important to allow the cedar to dry thoroughly after cleaning before re-staining or painting. Power washing is NOT recommended, because you run the risk of seriously damaging the wood, and compromising its ability to hold a finish. If you’re concerned about the environment, you’ll be happy to know real cedar is one of the most sustainable building materials available. It produces the least greenhouse gas, air pollution, water pollution and solid waste. In addition, western red cedar lumber is harvested from sustainably managed forests.
